All these recordings were made using sound material and data gathered from a spinal cord rehabilitation study I was involved in in 2013.

Each session of rehabilitation was three hours long, and the study continued over three months at Burwood spinal unit in Christchurch
The sound material was recorded by Reuben Derik when he came in and recorded machines/equipment and my activities on one of the sessions.

The audio was recorded with normal cardioid mics, and an induction microphone. The induction microphone was particularly effective in recording the functional electrical stimulation cycle, and the statistical monitor (recording heart, oxygen saturation et cetera) as it picks up electromagnetic fields.

The audio recordings were edited into samples, and these samples were controlled by granular synthesis.

The results of the data that was collected for one of the activities, the functional electrical stimulation exercise cycle was sent to me. I was sent 17 sessions, and each session had 13 types of quantitative data gathered. I selected five aspects of the quantitative data and use these to create parameters that would control oscillators, and alternately (when selected) an FM synthesiser.

The oscillators controlled by the data, and the audio samples were placed in one patch and synchronised using Max MSP. This dude me the opportunity to improvise and record performances which were then edited and mixed to create the album.
